Policies - our Principles

Our principles and guidelines for getting along well with each other

Admission Policy

All students are welcome to apply regardless of language, religion, sexual orientation, physical and cognitive abilities, gender, race, or culture. We are a welcoming community to all. Our goal through our admissions process is to clearly communicate with potential families about the familial involvement in the IB learning process and to be sure that we welcome those who are supportive of the IB, accept our school policies and mission, and appreciate and acknowledge the educational structure it provides. The IB is rigorous and we require students and guardians to agree to an inquiry-based education. It is our mission to find students and families who want to fully participate in our school community.

Assessment Policy

Assessment should support the individual development of the students through holistic and inclusive knowledge and teaching styles. The aim of assessment is to enable self-confidence and reflective learning in order to be able to help shape the students’ personal learning processes

The purpose of teaching is to guide students toward a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts in their current Unit of Inquiry. Assessment should focus on one thing for all students: understanding. Teaching with this goal in mind focuses on the process of learning rather than places pressure on the result of the learning.

Language Policy

At VS Smart City it is our goal to celebrate the diversity in our school and the 30+ languages that our students speak. German is our main language and English is our secondary language in all classes except one class where English is the main language and German is the secondary language. We also offer mother tongue classes after school hours for students who’d like to further learn and work on their home languages with a certified teacher.
