Newsletter #1 2025/26

HELLO!

Dear Families,

At our school, the PYP is the way we learn together. We encourage our children to be curious, ask questions, try new things and learn from their mistakes.
Through real-life topics and active learning processes, our pupils develop important subject-specific skills – and at the same time grow in responsibility, cooperation and empathy. It is particularly important to us that every child feels comfortable, valued and safe with us.
Thank you for being part of our school community – we look forward to walking this path together with you.
Warm regards,
Your Principal

IB NEWS

We are so incredibly proud to be the first public elementary school in Austria to be IB-certified. We are also the first Pflichtschule to have this accreditation as well. It’s been a journey getting to this point and we are proud to say we did it. Now begins the real work ensuring that the students are being taught in a true IB way. Over the next five years, we will be strengthening our teaching practices, teaching through concept-based teaching, going deeper into the Inquiry-based learning style and ensuring that our students are more self-sufficient in their learning abilities.
Already, we see so much growth in our school and our students with becoming more independent learners and taking risks in class asking questions, making connections and connecting their learning to real-world situations.
Thank you, VSC community for all of your support. We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without you.

WINTER CHOIR CONCERT

Wow! What an evening it was. The Aula was packed full with smiling, excited faces and the energy from the crowd was felt throughout the entire room. The 80 students waited impatiently, excited to share their hard work and joy with the audience waiting below. As we ascended the stairs, the audience broke into applause and the 2nd-4th graders beamed with pride.
We opened with our school song, written by former VSC teacher, Andreas Gross with English text by Jacki Hafellner.
Choir is a time-investment for the students. It does require extra rehearsals and home-study, but the students show a true passion for the class. It doesn’t matter if you feel that you have vocal talent or not, there is a place for you in choir and Mrs. H. focuses on teaching good technique that is accessible for each student.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us last night. It was a real heart-warming experience to see so many happy faces in the audience!

PROJECTS & FIELD TRIPS

Our pupils have recently been exploring and experiencing many exciting things. Here is a brief insight into STEM projects and excursions undertaken by Year 4 pupils:

How The World Works

Project: Carbon Dioxide

A particular focus was placed on carbon dioxide gas. In a classroom project, the children learned about air as a mixture of gases and discovered that there are invisible substances that are nevertheless effective. They learned that CO2 is an invisible gas that is produced during a chemical reaction (vinegar + baking soda).
  • The balloon experiment made the formation of gas visible and understandable.
  • Through the candle experiment, the children learned that CO2 is heavier than air and can extinguish fire because it displaces oxygen.
  • The highlight was building a rocket car powered by CO2. This taught them the principle of recoil. They built the vehicle in groups and raced the rocket cars on a track.

How We Express Ourselves

Project: The Body

As part of the unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’, the children in Year 4 explored the human body. Through movement, experiments and observation. They investigated how the heart, lungs, blood and other body systems work together.
The pupils recognised how their bodies help them to perceive, learn and respond to the world – and why movement and mindfulness are important for health.
In the process, the pupils strengthened key skills such as self-awareness, critical thinking, communication, cooperation and responsible behaviour in dealing with their own bodies.

Who We Are

Project & Trips: Media Literacy

In the IB topic ‘Who We Are’, students engaged intensively with their identity, their media behaviour and the responsible use of information. The focus was on how analogue and digital media influence our thinking, learning and coexistence.

The children learned to critically question information, distinguish between reliable and false sources, and use media safely. Through playful introductions, group work, research with books and children’s search engines, and reflection phases, they learned that not everything they read or hear is automatically true.

Another focus was on the topic of health and well-being: the pupils explored the brain, screen time and the importance of sleep, exercise and breaks. Together, they developed rules for safe and conscious media use. They discussed the responsibility of the media in disseminating information, how opinions can be influenced and why critical thinking is important. They also explored how technology, research and robotics shape our everyday lives and how digital development came about.
Three field trips complemented the lessons.

WHAT'S NEW

Parent's Association

The parent association has refreshed its online presence, and our website now offers a clearer,
friendlier overview of what we do.

You can explore everything at our website — including our WhatsApp channel, which makes staying informed even easier.

We are also planning to bring out a school yearbook, created together with the support of teachers
and parents. There is plenty of work ahead, but the project already feels inspiring. We’re excited to
build something meaningful — a tradition that will grow with our children year after year.
Parents‘ Café
Our next Elterncafé meeting will take place on Monday, 9 February, at Café Sorger next to the
school. A relaxed space to meet other parents and exchange ideas.
